Glossary and Abbreviations

In some of the articles here various terminology and abbreviations may be used. This page is to list these things so as to assist the reading wherever possible.
  • ATR - The USSF's Advice to Referee document.
  • CSA - Canadian Soccer Association. The national association of Canada.
  • DFK - Direct Free Kick.
  • DOGSO - Denying a Goal Scoring Opportunity
  • DOGSO-F - Denying a Goal Scoring Opportunity by an offence punishable by a free kick or a
    penalty kick.
  • DOGSO-H - Denying a Goal Scoring Opportunity by deliberately handling the ball.
  • FIFA - Fédération Internationale de Football Association. The guys at the top of the food chain.
  • GK - Goalkeeper, the only specially named player in the Laws of the Game.
  • IFAB - International Football Association Board. The board that discusses and decides upon proposed alterations to the Laws of the Game.
  • IFK - Indirect Free Kick.
  • LotG - Laws of the Game. This is the document released by FIFA on a (typically) annual basis that forms the basis of the games of football (soccer) and futsal.
  • OSA - Ontario Soccer Association. Ontario's provincial association. Answers (in theory) to the CSA. 
  • SFP - Serious Foul Play. One of the seven types of dismissal.
  • VC - Violent Conduct. One of the seven types of dismissal.
  • USB - Unsporting Behaviour. One of the seven types of cautions, also referred to as "Y1" in Ontario.
  • USSF - United States Soccer Federation.
